ChatGPT Ads Hits $1 Billion Run Rate In Under 200 Days

OpenAI’s $1 billion run rate from ChatGPT ads shows advertising is no longer an experiment—it’s driving its business. By aligning ads with real decision-making moments, the platform is attracting small and medium-sized businesses worldwide. Self-service access is opening the market to startups and local advertisers.

ChatGPT Ads – OpenAI

OpenAI has built a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate from ChatGPT advertising in less than 200 days, turning ads into a meaningful new pillar of its rapidly expanding business.

The company says tens of thousands of advertisers are now using ChatGPT Ads, while self-service advertising is expanding across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI says advertisers outside the United States are already becoming an increasingly important part of the business.

The milestone matters because it shows that advertising is moving quickly from an experiment into a significant component of OpenAI’s business model—alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise products and APIs.

A New Advertising Model

ChatGPT is different from traditional advertising platforms because users often arrive with a specific intention.

They may be comparing software, researching a product, planning a purchase or evaluating different options.

OpenAI is positioning its advertising system around those moments of decision-making. Ads can use the context of the current conversation to deliver relevant advertising, while remaining clearly separated from ChatGPT’s answers.

That creates a potentially valuable advertising environment.

Instead of targeting someone simply because they searched for a keyword, advertisers can potentially reach someone while they are actively considering a decision.

Self-Service Opens The Market

The expansion of Ads Manager is just as important as the $1 billion milestone.

OpenAI initially relied heavily on managed advertisers, agencies and technology partners. It later introduced self-service tools, opening the platform to smaller companies and startups. OpenAI says small and medium-sized businesses now represent a material share of the advertising business.

Self-service access is now expanding internationally, including India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

OpenAI’s current availability information also lists Brazil among countries where self-service advertising is available.

This changes the potential scale of the business.

The platform is moving from a relatively small group of major advertisers toward something closer to a global advertising marketplace.

ChatGPT Is Becoming An Advertising Platform

The economics are becoming increasingly interesting.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are now available in more than 40 countries, while its advertiser base has grown to tens of thousands of companies. The platform supports CPC and outcome-optimized campaigns, geographic targeting, custom audiences and measurement tools including the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API.

OpenAI has also reported early examples of advertisers generating measurable results, including one e-commerce advertiser achieving a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days.

The company is therefore building more than an ad format.

It is building an advertising infrastructure around conversational intent.

The Bigger Business Model

Advertising gives OpenAI another way to monetize the enormous amount of activity taking place inside ChatGPT.

The company’s business now spans several major revenue streams:

  • Consumer subscriptions
  • Enterprise products
  • API usage
  • Advertising

That diversification matters because AI infrastructure is expensive.

Running increasingly capable models requires enormous investments in computing, data centers, chips and energy. Advertising provides a way to monetize users who may not pay directly for a subscription while helping support free and lower-cost access to ChatGPT.

Ads And Answers Remain Separate

OpenAI says advertisements are clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s responses.

The company also says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides and that advertisers do not receive access to users’ private conversations. Users can also control how their advertising experience is personalized.

That separation will be critical.

The value of ChatGPT advertising depends partly on users continuing to trust the system to provide useful answers independently of commercial interests.

If that trust weakens, the advantage of conversational advertising could quickly become a liability.

Why It Matters

OpenAI has reached a significant milestone in an unusually short period of time.

Generating a $1 billion annualized advertising run rate in less than 200 days suggests that advertising could become much more important to the economics of AI platforms than many expected.

But the more interesting question is what comes next.

Traditional advertising is built around searches, websites, feeds and apps.

ChatGPT introduces another possibility: advertising built around conversations and decisions.

If OpenAI can scale that model while maintaining user trust, ChatGPT could become not only an AI assistant, but a major new advertising channel for the global economy.

The AI era may be creating a new advertising market—and OpenAI has already reached $1 billion in annualized revenue from it.
