For years, foldable phones were largely a story about experimentation: Samsung, Huawei and other manufacturers tried to convince consumers that a smartphone could become something larger without becoming a tablet. Apple waited. Now, after more than a decade of development, the company has finally entered the category with the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone.

Apple’s approach is distinctly its own. The Duo opens like a book, revealing a 7.6-inch inner display, while a 5.4-inch outer screen keeps it compact when closed. It uses a titanium hinge structure, ProMotion, an A20 Pro chip, dual 48-megapixel rear cameras and a redesigned iOS experience built around the larger canvas. In Brazil, it starts at R$21,999, making it the most expensive iPhone in the company’s current lineup.

Apple Didn’t Invent the Foldable Phone

That is precisely what makes the Duo interesting.

Apple arrives years after the first major foldable smartphones. Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold in 2019, creating a new category that Apple initially chose not to pursue. Instead of competing on being first, Apple spent years watching the technology mature—and apparently waiting until it could integrate the hardware, software and ecosystem into a product that fit its standards.

The result is less about introducing a completely unknown concept and more about redefining how Apple believes a foldable phone should work.

When closed, the Duo behaves like a conventional iPhone. Open it, and the 7.6-inch display creates space for multitasking, gaming and productivity. Apple has also designed iOS experiences specifically around the different positions of the device, including book, tent and notebook-style configurations.

The Hardware Is Only Half the Story

The real bet is the ecosystem.

The Duo supports Apple Pencil functionality, multitasking and an iOS interface designed to adapt between its two screens. That gives Apple an advantage that goes beyond the physical hinge: the company controls the processor, operating system, applications and hardware design simultaneously.

Its A20 Pro chip also brings Apple’s latest AI-focused architecture, including a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The device includes up to 2TB of storage and a dual 48MP Fusion camera system.

Apple is therefore entering the foldable market with a familiar strategy: arrive later, but attempt to make the category feel more mature.

The question now is whether consumers will accept the price.

At US$1,999 in the United States and starting at R$21,999 in Brazil, the Duo is not positioned as an experiment for the mass market. It is a premium product designed to test whether Apple’s ecosystem can turn foldables from a niche category into the next major evolution of the smartphone.
