Seven Days of Cybercab: What Tesla’s First Week Really Revealed

Tesla’s Cybercab is now a real deal in Austin with 45 vehicles operational, but it’s far behind Waymo. Tech is impressive, but scaling and regulatory issues are major hurdles. Next steps are crucial!

For years, the Cybercab existed mostly as a promise. Tesla presented a future in which passengers would enter a car without a steering wheel or pedals, select a destination and simply let the machine drive. One week after that future finally reached paying passengers in Austin, the first results are beginning to separate the vision from the reality.

Tesla launched the Cybercab publicly on September 4, initially within a limited area of Austin. One week later, 45 Cybercabs are registered in Texas, while Tesla has around 420 robotaxis in the state when Model Y vehicles are included. The company has demonstrated that a purpose-built, driverless vehicle can operate commercially, but its initial scale remains tiny compared with Waymo, which has nearly 1,000 vehicles registered in Texas and operates thousands across the United States.

The First Week Was About More Than Driving

The most important result is that the Cybercab is no longer a concept.

Independent field testing found the vehicle capable of completing multiple autonomous trips without a human driver inside. The experience was generally quiet and smooth, while the interior demonstrated several design choices specifically intended for autonomous transportation, including automatic doors, spacious seating and accessibility features.

But the same tests also revealed that Tesla’s hardware currently appears more mature than its software experience.

The in-car system still has limitations, including the inability for passengers to change destinations directly through the vehicle’s AI assistant. Some testers also reported conservative driving behavior, unusual route decisions and limitations with climate control.

That distinction matters because Tesla is not merely selling a car.

It is attempting to sell an autonomous transportation service.

The Biggest Problem Is Still Scale

A robotaxi becomes economically interesting when it can operate at meaningful volume.

Tesla currently does not have that volume.

The company’s 45 Cybercabs registered in Texas are a fraction of Waymo’s fleet. Early Austin rides have also shown the consequences of limited supply: one tester reported a wait of roughly 45 minutes for a short trip, while another comparison found Tesla’s Cybercab costing more and taking substantially longer to arrive than competing ride-hailing options.

That creates a paradox.

The Cybercab is technologically unusual enough to attract enormous attention, but there are not yet enough of them to demonstrate the economics Tesla ultimately wants to achieve.

The next milestone is therefore not another impressive demonstration.

It is volume.

Then Came Washington

Tesla’s first week also produced a regulatory problem.

On September 4, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Tesla’s self-certification of the Cybercab. The agency is examining whether the vehicle complies with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, particularly given its absence of conventional steering wheels, pedals and mirrors.

The timing could hardly have been more significant.

Tesla spent years arguing that autonomous transportation would eventually make traditional driving controls unnecessary. Now that proposition is being tested not only on Austin’s streets, but inside the regulatory system designed around human drivers.

The Cybercab therefore has two tests running simultaneously:

Can the AI drive?

And:

Can the legal system accommodate a vehicle designed around the assumption that humans will not?

The First Week Changed The Question

Before September 4, the central question was whether Tesla could actually launch a steering-wheel-free robotaxi.

It did.

Now the question is much harder.

Can Tesla turn 45 Cybercabs into thousands, then tens of thousands, without sacrificing safety, economics or reliability?

That is where the next chapter of the Cybercab story begins.

The first seven days have not established Tesla as the leader of the robotaxi industry. Waymo remains substantially larger, and Tesla still faces regulatory scrutiny and a significant scaling challenge.

But they have established something important: the Cybercab has crossed the line from prototype to operating product.

The next seven months may matter far more than the first seven days.
