When people hear the word TED, they usually think of a short, inspiring presentation.
What many don’t realize is that TED has evolved into a global nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing ideas that shape business, science, technology, education and society. What began as a small conference in 1984 has become one of the most recognized knowledge platforms in the world, with talks translated into more than 100 languages and viewed billions of times.

The CD was introduced on October 1, 1982 — but in early 1984 it was still slowly rolling out to consumer markets. In this surprising demo onstage at the very first TED, in February 1984, Mickey Schulhof of the Sony Corporation describes and then demonstrates the use of “compact disc digital audio.”
From its flagship TED Conference to TEDx, TED-Ed, podcasts and educational initiatives, the organization has built a global ecosystem designed to make knowledge more accessible and encourage meaningful conversations.

From A Small Conference To A Global Movement
TED originally stood for Technology, Entertainment and Design.
The first conference was held in 1984, bringing together innovators from different industries to discuss emerging technologies and creative ideas. Over time, the organization expanded far beyond its original focus, embracing virtually every field of human knowledge.
Today, TED covers topics including:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Business
- Science
- Medicine
- Climate
- Education
- Psychology
- Leadership
- Entrepreneurship
- Design
Its mission remains remarkably simple: spread ideas that can change the way people think about the world.
More Than Inspirational Talks
Although TED Talks are its most recognizable product, the organization has become much more than a video platform.
Its ecosystem now includes:
- TED Conferences
- TEDx
- TED-Ed
- TED Podcasts
- TED Democracy
- TEDWomen
- TEDNext
- The Audacious Project
Together, these initiatives help connect researchers, entrepreneurs, educators, artists and policymakers through ideas that often influence public debate, education and innovation worldwide.
Why TED Matters
Few organizations have democratized knowledge as effectively as TED.
By making expert presentations freely available online, TED transformed what was once an invitation-only conference into one of the world’s largest educational media platforms.
Its talks have introduced millions of people to groundbreaking discoveries, business strategies, scientific research and personal stories that continue influencing classrooms, boardrooms and public policy around the globe.
Building A Global Community Around Ideas
One of TED’s greatest strengths is its community.
Through independently organized TEDx events, universities, companies and local organizations have hosted thousands of conferences that bring world-class ideas to regional audiences while preserving TED’s mission of sharing knowledge openly.
What To Watch
As technology continues reshaping how people learn and communicate, TED is expanding into new formats and initiatives.
Key areas include:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Education
- Podcasts
- TEDx Expansion
- Global Conferences
- Climate Initiatives
- Digital Learning
These efforts reinforce TED’s position as one of the world’s most influential platforms for sharing knowledge and inspiring innovation.
