The internet was built around speed and connectivity. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly autonomous, another layer is becoming just as important: security. Cloudflare is now positioning itself at that intersection, and investors are responding. Shares of the company surged sharply on September 9 after Cloudflare unveiled a new AI security service built with OpenAI’s cyber models.
The new Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation service, available through Cloudflare Managed Defense, uses OpenAI’s Daybreak Defense Network, including the GPT-5.6 Cyber model, to identify high-risk software vulnerabilities, help block attacks at the network edge and generate code patches for developers. The announcement has strengthened the market’s view that Cloudflare could become an important security layer for the rapidly expanding agentic-AI economy.
From Internet Infrastructure To AI Infrastructure
Cloudflare’s evolution is important because the company is no longer simply competing to make websites faster or protect them from conventional cyberattacks.
As businesses deploy AI agents capable of accessing software, data and corporate systems, the attack surface is expanding. Cloudflare’s strategy is to place AI-powered security directly into the infrastructure through which that activity flows.
That makes the OpenAI relationship strategically significant. Cloudflare provides the global network and security infrastructure, while OpenAI contributes increasingly capable cybersecurity models. Together, the companies are attempting to automate part of the process that traditionally required security teams to discover vulnerabilities, investigate them and develop defenses manually.
Investors appear to be viewing that combination as evidence that Cloudflare can participate in the next generation of AI infrastructure rather than simply benefit from higher internet traffic.
The move also arrives as disclosed software vulnerabilities continue to accelerate. More than 60,000 vulnerabilities had already been recorded in the National Vulnerability Database by early September, exceeding the total recorded during the previous year.
Cloudflare’s rally therefore reflects more than one product launch.
It is a bet that as AI becomes capable of doing more, the infrastructure protecting those systems will become increasingly valuable.
